About Nellore
For those new to Nellore
Nellore is a district in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located in the south east corner of Andhra Pradesh, India. Nellore is the southernmost coastal district in Andhra. It is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the east, the state of Tamil Nadu to the South, the district of Cuddapah to west, and the district of Prakasam to the north. Nellore is the capital city of the district. Nellore City is situated on the south bank of Penna River. Other major towns in Nellore district are Gudur, Kavali, Podalkur, Venkatagiri, Kovur, and many smaller towns exist.
Penna is main river of the Nellore district. With building of Sangam and Nellore anakatta this river made many people happy with its regular water supply and irrigation. With building of Somasila Dam and Kandaleru reservoir I think there will be more happy people in the district.
Nellore has reasonable infrastructure. It is traversed by national highway (connecting Chennai and Kolkata) connecting most of the important towns. It also has good network of the state highways. Regarding railways it is well connected to most cities in India, with Gudur being major railway junction. Also there is new proposal of building new railway line from Krishnapatnam and Rajempet.
Airport wise nearest international and domestic air port is Chennai which is only 135 kilometres away. Also there is a suggestion of a future airport in the city to serve its growing economic needs. Nellore has minor port of Krishnapatnam. Of late there is lot of interest in this port because it has fewer controversies and is well placed to import coal for the up coming electrical industry and export byrates from cudappah district.
Nellore has rich past. It was known as Vikramasimhapuri, and was ruled by fiercest dynasties under whom it had a golden era. It is has very rich literary past, it is the place where the greatest of the Telugu poets, Tikkana Somayaji, translated the Mahabharata into Telugu, lived here. Even the first telugu Poetess Molla was born in this place.
Of other things Nellore is famous for is Sriharikota Space Center which is main rocket launching station for ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) which is India's prime space center including a launch pad facility for Satellite Launch Vehicle, technical center for rocket testing and assembly, and for launch control, satellite tracking and remote sensing. Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is other place of interest in Nellore district. It is located about 20-km north of Pulicat in the Nellore district in nelapattu village. It is one of the largest pelican habitats in Southeast Asia. It provides fine breeding ground for rare and endangered species like Spoted Billed Pelican, Open-Billed Stork, Painted Stork, Little Cormorant, Spoon-Bill, White-Ibis and Night Heron.(2)
Nellore also boasts rich Hindu heritage with many great temples located in the district. They include Talapagiri Ranganatha Swamy temple, Jonnawada temple, Penchalakonda temple, Sri Raja Rajeswari Temple and Sri Ranga Nayaka Swamy Temples at Nellore.
With this blog I will try to keep up to date with preset activities in the Nellore district.
